Mid-Winter Open 2020

So I decided to try and to do little post tournament updates after each tournament I play in this year and talk about my card mates and all the crazy/cool things that happened. Also I am doing this so you can see what a tournament is like. I plan to be a little bit better next time as this was an idea that I had while driving there that morning. Definitely had some technical issues for when I was throwing (learned I can’t play music on my head phones and video at the same time)

So the 21st Mid-Winter Open had a total of 113 people playing and that’s a lot for a C-Tier! There was a total of 23 in Advanced which was the largest group.

So I got to play with Morgan, Terrance, and Lance in the first round and I have had the opportunity to play with all of those guys and they are awesome dudes. @ivory31887 is from the Monroe area and we both started playing tournaments around the same time so it’s cool to see that we have progressed so much since 2017. He throws all discraft and made a hilarious video this week that you can check out on YouTube. He is also sponsored by Cloud 9.

@themwj is from the Alexandria area and we have a lot of similar friends as well. He is part of the Prodigy Street Team so he throws all Prodigy. He is also sponsored by Cloud 9.

Lance is from the Baton Rouge area and for some reason I didn’t get any video of him but he is a lefty, can chunk some plastic and is an awesome dude!

2nd round I got to play with Morgan again and another guy named Chancey. This was the second time I got to play with Chancey in a tournament and he throws some great turnover shots with his backhand that I’m still trying to figure out as I am a predominant forehand player.

So if you made it this far I guess you are at least interested to see how I did. I had a lot interesting firsts this weekend happen to me. The first 13 holes of the tournament I only had one mistake really and it did happen with my first provisional ever during a round. I threw an upshot near the basket but it hit a tree and it rolled into a river near by. I did not see exactly where it rolled out so I threw from my original lie for one score and got a 6 and then I was able to get a 5 from where I thought it went out. I also lost my ACE Disc on that throw so there’s that as well…. After that I was able to play a clean round until there was 4 holes left. I stepped up to the tee box to throw but one of my card mates said wait a second so I turned around and next thing I know there is a DISC HITTING ME IN THE CHEST!!!! I was in shock that I just got hit by a disc. After that I had to throw and I was playing on a water hole and I think get hitting by the disc messed up my mental game. I then threw my tee shot dead into the water, then my second throw I also threw it into the water, and then my third throw hit a tree and went into the water. So I was putting for 7 by this time and I was frustrated. I tried to run a put and missed and then I missed again when I ran another putt and then missed a tap in because I turbo putted out of frustration so I got a 10… I got a 10… I was able to finish the last few holes without any more damage but that 10 is what I was reminded of the rest of the day and getting hit in the chest. I was in last place as well

2nd round I started off with 3 bogeys through the first 4 holes. I felt that I was keeping a good attitude and knew that eventually everything would click and wouldn’t you guess… I WAS RIGHT!!! I had a great last 14 holes to end the tournament where I had lots of birdies and only missed a couple other birdie putts but I didn’t have any more Bogeys. I was able to jump 4 people. It wasn’t the result that I was hoping for but I know I played more consistent on 35 holes of this tournament. I will never forget the disc that hit my chest and the 10 that followed afterwards…

Overall I had a fun weekend. Got to hangout with a lot of friends that I haven’t seen since last year when my 2019 season was over. I got to play a new course and also improved on a course that I have played before. But, what I learned most from this tournament that also applies to life is when something hits you in the chest you have to be ready to adapt and make adjustments. If you don’t then it will put you in a worse place then you really want to be.

Next tournament I will be playing in is “The Bob Classic” at Sam Houston State Park in Moss Bluff, Louisiana
